Stetson R. Bickley, M.D. received his Bachelor’s degree from Clemson University, in Clemson South Carolina. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He completed residency in diagnostic radiology and a neuroradiology fellowship at MUSC, serving as chief resident during his final year of residency.

Prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology, Dr. Bickley was in practice for two years at the Carilion Clinic, serving as a diagnostic neuroradiologist for the clinic and as an assistant professor for the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Dr. Bickley specializes in neurological imaging, specifically MRI and CT of the brain, neck, and spine. Dr. Bickley is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Kelan J. Brown, M.D. completed his undergraduate training at Wofford College prior to attaining his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. His Radiology residency was completed at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where he was selected Chief Resident. He then completed a Fellowship in Body Imaging at Duke University prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology.

Dr. Brown specializes in oncologic imaging and procedures specifically utilizing MRI, CT, and ultrasound. His professional interests include radiation dose reduction techniques, women’s imaging, and patient-centered healthcare delivery. Dr. Brown is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Joan Hu Burkhardt, M.D. received her Bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She graduated from Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, and trained in general surgery for two years at Massachusetts General Hospital. She subsequently completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Lahey Clinic Medical Center and a Fellowship in Body Imaging at Harvard Medical School prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology.

Dr. Burkhardt specializes in abdominal and pelvic imaging and interventions, specifically MRI, CT, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy. Dr. Burkhardt is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Matthew T. Chaney, M.D., received his medical degree from West Virginia University and his undergraduate degree from Duke University. He completed a transitional internship at Georgetown University. His radiology residency training was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then completed a fellowship in breast imaging at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Chaney is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Collins E. Chijioke, M.D. obtained his undergraduate degree from The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).  He earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine in Nashville, TN. Following medical school, he did a Transitional Year Internship at The University of Tennessee College of Medicine at Chattanooga. He completed his Radiology Residency at Rochester General Hospital.  His fellowship in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was at Michigan State University.

Dr. Chijioke is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

David A. Dowe, MD, FACR, received his Bachelors Degree from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY. He received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical School. He then did two years of General Surgery Residency and four years of Radiology Residency at SUNY Upstate Medical School. He was named Chief Resident. He was in practice with Atlantic Medical Imaging in Galloway, NJ for 24 years before joining Upstate Carolina Radiology. He worked with General Electric for many years and is credited with being one of the founders of Coronary CTA having done his first one in December 2001 and having done more than 20,000 exams.

Michael J. Enright, M.D., attended Ohio State University, where he obtained his Pharmaceutical Degree. Dr. Enright attended Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed his radiology residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine. He completed a Medical Imaging fellowship at the University of Virginia and specializes in MRI, CT and Ultrasound.

Dr. Enright is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Stephan O. Haas, M.D. received his Bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He then completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School – Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, followed by a two-year fellowship in Neuroradiology at Baylor College of Medicine – The Methodist Hospital in Houston. He served as a Clinical Instructor in Interventional Radiology at Ben Taub General Hospital during his second year of fellowship.

Dr. Haas has been in private practice in Texas for the past 15 years, performing Neuro and Interventional Radiology, prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology.

Specializing in neurological imaging, specifically MRI and CT of the brain, neck, and spinal axis, Dr. Haas is board certified by the American Board of Radiology, and a Senior Member of the American Society of Neuroradiology.

James B. Haswell, M.D. received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas. He then completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine followed by a fellowship in Body Imaging was at Duke University Medical Center. After training, Dr. Haswell spent nine years at Florence Radiology Associates in Florence, South Carolina prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology Associates.

Dr. Haswell is Board Certified in Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

Robert L. Helmer, MD, MS received his bachelor’s degree from Hanover College in southern Indiana. He holds a Masters degree from Indiana University in Physiology and Biophysics. He earned his medical degree from Indiana University. Following medical school, Dr. Helmer served five years in the U. S. Navy as a Flight Surgeon following a Transitional Internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. After his military career, he completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology and a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Radiology at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Helmer is certified by the American Board of Radiology with a subspecialty in orthopedic imaging.

William T. Joyce, III, M.D., received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and his undergraduate degree from Clemson University. His Radiology Residency and Fellowship were completed at Bowman-Gray School of Medicine.

Dr. Joyce specializes in Nuclear Medicine and PET imaging. He has served as Medical Director of the Radiation Safety Committee, Member of the Institutional Review Board, Director of Radiology at Spartanburg Regional Hospital for Restorative Care.

Dr. Joyce is board certified with the American Board of Nuclear Medicine and with the American Board of Radiology.

Jason P. Kelly, MD, MS is the President of Upstate Carolina Radiology. He attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He holds a Master’s degree in Neurobiology from Georgia State University. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Kelly did his transitional internship, diagnostic radiology residency, and musculoskeletal fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Kelly served as chief resident, a member of the graduate medical education committee, and was awarded fellow of the year in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Kelly is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Kelly subspecializes in orthopedic imaging.

Paul D. Kountz, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. is a graduate of The Spartanburg Day School and received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College. He completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at Vanderbilt University, earning a Ph.D. in physiology as well as an M.D. He completed residencies in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine at The Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis. After training, Dr. Kountz spent fifteen years as a managing partner of Rome Radiology Group in Rome, Georgia prior to joining Spartanburg Radiological Associates.

Dr. Kountz is a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic and nuclear radiology. His subspecialty expertise includes nuclear medicine and PET imaging as well as women’s imaging.

Graduated from college from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Attended the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Performed Internship at University of Florida at Shand’s Jacksonville in Jacksonville, FL. Completed Radiology Residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Satisfied a Nuclear Medicine Fellowship at Wake Forest University’s Baptist Medical Center. Performed a Cardiac Imaging “Mini-Fellowship” at Shand’s Jacksonville in FL.

Dr. Barry Lazenby received a Bachelors of Science at Vanderbilt University and received his Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He then completed an internship in Internal Medicine, as well as, a Diagnostic Radiology residency at the Medical College of Georgia. Most recently, Dr. Lazenby completed his subspecialty training at the University of California, San Diego. While there, he received subspecialty training focusing on the use of MRI to evaluate a variety of conditions in the abdomen and pelvis.

Christin N. Martino, M. D. received her Bachelor’s degree from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. She graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine from Louisiana State University Health Science Center in Shreveport Louisiana. Dr. Martino completed her diagnostic radiology residency, a body imaging fellowship and a breast imaging fellowship at VCU Health in Richmond, Virginia.

Prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology, Dr. Martino practiced two years in Hickory, North Carolina.

Dr. Martino is board certified with the American Board of Radiology.

Jeffrey M. Newman, M.D., received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and his undergraduate degree was completed at Wofford College. His Radiology Residency was completed at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, TN.

Dr. Newman is a member of the South Carolina Medical Association, the Radiological Society of North America, the American College of Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society and is Board Certified with the American Board of Radiology.

Luther G. Person, M.D. received his Bachelor’s degree from Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. He graduated from The University of Michigan Medical School. He was a member of the US Air Force and completed his surgery internship and diagnostic radiology residency at David Grant Medical Center, Travis AFB CA. He was selected Chief Resident. He was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska to finish his commitment.

Prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology, he spent 13 years at Rutherford Regional Hospital in Rutherfordton, NC where he served as Department Chief and was on the Hospital Board for many years.

Dr. Person is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

James L. Peters, MD, completed his undergraduate degree at Oakland University prior to attending medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. His radiology residency was performed at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, followed by one-year fellowships in both MRI and Nuclear Medicine. He is board certified by both the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. Interests include emergency radiology, cardiac and oncologic imaging.

John F. Parrott, Jr., M.D. obtained his medical Degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN. His internship was completed at St. Vincent Hospital, Indiana, IN in Preliminary Medicine. This was then followed by his Radiology Residency and Neuroradiology Fellowship at Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Parrott is board certified with the American Board of Radiology with a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in Neuroradiology.

Karen S. Patrick, M.D. received her Bachelor’s Degree from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. She received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed a transitional internship at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. She returned to Charleston to complete both her radiology residency and a fellowship in breast imaging at the Medical University of South Carolina.

David E. Pelino D.O. obtained his osteopathic degree at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, IA. His internship was completed at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. This was then followed by his Radiology residency and fellowship in Neuroradiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Pelino is board certified with the American Board of Radiology and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology.

F. P. Ryan, M.D., received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and his undergraduate degree from Emory University. His Radiology Residency was completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has received additional training at the Vanderbilt University Department of Pathology.

Dr. Ryan is Board Certified in Pathology and with the American Board of Radiology.

Joshua F. Smith, M.D. received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. He graduated from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. He subsequently completed a general medicine internship, diagnostic radiology residency, and musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at the University of Virginia. While at the University of Virginia Dr. Smith received advanced training in breast imaging and interventions prior to joining Upstate Carolina Radiology.
Dr. Smith specializes in orthopedic and breast imaging using MRI, CT, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy.

David R. Stoppenhagen, M.D., received his medical and undergraduate degrees from Indiana University. Following a transitional internship at the University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian, he completed a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Stoppenhagen specialized in abdominal and pelvic imaging including, MRI, CT-Scan and Ultrasound at the University of Wisconsin. He is the former Chief of Radiology for the Augusta VA Medical Center, and former Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology for the Medical College of Georgia.

He is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Lawrence N. Warren, Jr., M.D., received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, his undergraduate degree was completed at Duke University. His Radiology Residency was completed at the Medical College of Georgia.

Dr. Warren specializes in Mammography. He has served as Chairman for the Department of Radiology; Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Quality Council, Breast Cancer Advisory Committee and the Executive Committee.

Dr. Warren is Board Certified in Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

Brian H. Baghdady, M.D. is Board Certified in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology and is a graduate of both the Interventional and Vascular Radiology fellowship and the Diagnostic Radiology residency programs of the University of Virginia. He is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina with masters and undergraduate degrees from Clemson University.

Dr. Baghdady’s specialty combines minimally invasive surgeries and imaging technologies to diagnose, treat and manage many diseases including: vascular disease (blood vessel blockages, leg pain, aneurysms and bleeding), varicose veins, cancer conditions, uterine fibroid disease, and back pain. Specific areas of interest and expertise include: peripheral and carotid artery angioplasty and stenting, varicose vein treatment, uterine fibroid embolization, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and diagnostic vascular imaging.

In the Upstate of South Carolina, Dr. Baghdady is on the medical staff of Bon Secours Saint Francis Hospital System-Greenville, Spartanburg Regional Hospital System- Spartanburg and Upstate Carolina Hospital-Gaffney.

Daniel Bozarth, MD, received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry followed by his medical degree from Indiana University. A transitional internship preceded his radiology residency at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Bozarth then completed a Vascular and Interventional Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.

Dr. Bozarth comes to the Upstate from Kalamazoo, Michigan where he served as director of the Interventional Radiology Department of Borgess Medical Center. He specializes in vascular imaging and minimally invasive procedures with special interest in Women’s Health and Interventional Oncology. Dr. Bozarth is an active member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, American College of Radiology, and the AMA.

Richard J. Harp, M.D., received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, and his undergraduate degree in Engineering from Purdue University. His Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship was completed at Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute. His Surgical Internship and Radiology Residency were completed at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Harp practices all aspects of Endovascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology. Special interests include endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms, treatment of peripheral vascular disease, and varicose vein ablation. Dr. Harp also specializes in the percutaneous treatment of tumors, including chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation, and uterine fibroid embolization.

Michael J. Ludkowski, M.D., earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biochemistry from Rutgers College, the founding school of Rutgers University in New Jersey. He continued his education at, and obtained his Medical Degree from, the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. Following medical school, he successfully completed an Internship in General Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin before beginning Residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Allegheny General Hospital, part of the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann University System. Upon completion of his Residency, Dr. Ludkowski began a Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Northwestern University Medical School. After Fellowship, Dr. Ludkowski joined the Faculty of the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Colorado. At the University of Colorado, Dr. Ludkowski started an active clinic-based practice while helping to grow a busy hospital-based practice performing advanced minimally invasive procedures – while teaching Medical Students, Radiology Residents, and Interventional Radiology Fellows.

Dr. Ludkowski joined Upstate Carolina Radiology in 2006 after five years of experience working in a tertiary-care University Teaching Hospital, a Level One Trauma Center, a large Children’s Hospital, and a regional Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Ludkowski treats patients of the Upstate with expertise in the following areas: Percutaneous stabilization of Vertebral Compression Fractures, Endovascular treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease, Outpatient therapy of Varicose Veins, Minimally invasive treatments for Portal Hypertension, as well as Radiofrequency Ablation and Chemoembolization of Liver Tumors.

Dr. Ludkowski is Board Certified in Diagnostic Radiology and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology, both from the American Board of Radiology. He attends a variety of medical conferences each year and is continually implementing new, minimally invasive, ways of treating a variety of disease processes.

Amanda A. Faile, RN, ACNP received her Masters Science in Nursing degree from the University of South Carolina, where she also received her undergraduate degree in Nursing.

Ms. Faile was ANCC Board Certified in 2002. She specializes in Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology. She is a member of SCNA, AMA and RNA.

Kristy L. Halasy, PA-C graduated from the Physician Assistant program at Cuyahoga Community College in northeastern Ohio. She received her undergraduate degree from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Ms. Halasy has been certified as a Physician Assistant since 1999. She specializes in Interventional Radiology. She is a member of AAPA and SCAPA.

Kim L. Waldenmaier, FNP-C received her Masters of Science in Nursing degree from Clemson University. She received her undergraduate degree in Nursing from the University of the State of New York, Regents College.

Ms. Waldenmaier was AANP Board Certified in 2005. She specializes in Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery. She is a member of AANP, Society for Vascular Nursing and Sigma Theta Tau.
